Police Seek the Public’s Help in Locating Wanted Eluding Suspect

NEWARK, NJ - Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara requests the public’s help in locating Rufus Brown, 47, of Newark, wanted on a charge of eluding in an incident that occurred on Sunday, August 21, 2021.

At approximately 1:20 p.m., police observed an Econoline van in the area of Tremont Avenue near Chelsea Avenue that was reported stolen on August 19, 2021. A motor vehicle stop was attempted, but the driver fled. About an hour later, officers observed the same vehicle again at Chelsea Avenue, heading towards Tremont Avenue. While officers detained the male driver, his passenger drove away in the stolen vehicle, heading east on Tremont Avenue towards North Munn Avenue.

Detectives investigating this incident have identified the passenger as Rufus Brown and obtained a warrant for his arrest. While police are actively searching for Brown, we seek the public’s help in quickly locating him as part of this investigation. He is described a 6-ft. tall and 200 lbs., with a medium brown complexion, gray hair and brown eyes.
