PLAINFIELD, NJ - Eight buildings along East Front Street in the city's downtown shopping area were destroyed in a multiple-alarm fire that raged for hours and displaced about 30 people.
Fire companies from Plainfield received mutual aid from Scotch Plains, Union, Westfield, Springfield, Fanwood, Cranford, Summit, Rahway, Linden, Mountainside, New Providence, Clark, Berkeley Heights, Roselle, North Plainfield, and South Plainfield.
No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
The Red Cross provided temporary shelter to the displaced residents.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by Union County Arson Taskforce and State Fire Marshall Office.
